You never really know

God's grace surpasses our ability to understand

You never really know
how God is working
in the soul of someone
who appears to be lost.

Jesus holds in his pierced hands
the aching heart,
the wounded psyche,
the depth of doubt
 in every wretched life.

Jesus holds it all,
and puts together
our disparate wandering ways.

What we hold as certain
may not seem so
in God’s merciful eyes.

Allow room for grace,
for that amazing grace
which defies reality
and lets hope flow
like a cleansing shower
to each vagabond, filthy and tattered,
and to you and me.

And thank God for that!
